How to use it

  1. Choose whether your target is a dollar profit per order or a profit margin.
  2. Enter what the item costs you, the shipping you charge, and what the label costs you. Open “More options” for quantity, sales tax, Offsite Ads and packaging.
  3. Read the minimum item price. Any lower price misses your target; the breakdown shows the fees and profit at that price.

Why fees make pricing harder than it looks

Etsy takes most of its fees as a percentage of the order, so every dollar you add to the price adds to the fees as well. Adding your costs and the fees together gives a price that falls short. The calculator works from the target instead: it tests prices cent by cent, with Etsy’s rounding, until the profit after fees reaches what you asked for. The fee rates and sources are on the method page.

Worked examples

Target: keep $14.20 per order

The item costs $8.00, you charge $5.00 shipping and the label costs $4.50. The lowest price that keeps $14.20 is $25.00 — the same order as the profit calculator example, worked backwards. One cent less leaves you a cent short.

Target: a 40% margin

With the same costs, a 40% margin needs at least $20.65:

Buyer pays (item + shipping)$25.65
Etsy fees (transaction $1.67, processing $1.02, listing $0.20)−$2.89
Item cost and shipping label−$12.50
Profit$10.26 (40.0%)

Same 40% margin, but the order came from an Offsite Ad

Etsy charges 15% of the order on sales from its offsite ads. To keep a 40% margin on those orders, the price has to rise from $20.65 to $31.47.

Margin vs markup

Margin is profit as a share of what the buyer pays. Markup is profit compared with what you spent. They describe the same sale with different numbers: in the 40% margin example above, the profit of $10.26 is 40.0% of the $25.65 the buyer pays, but a 82.1% markup on your $12.50 of costs.

This calculator works with margin. If you think in markup, convert first: a 50% markup is a 33.3% margin, and a 100% markup is a 50% margin.

Questions about pricing on Etsy

How do I price an item on Etsy to make a profit?

Start from what you want to keep, not from your costs. Enter your target profit or margin and your costs, and the calculator finds the lowest price that still meets the target after Etsy's 6.5% transaction fee, 3% + $0.25 payment processing, the $0.20 listing fee and, if you choose, the Offsite Ads fee.

Why can't I just add Etsy's fees to my costs?

Because most Etsy fees are a percentage of the price. Raise the price to cover the fees and the fees go up too. The calculator handles this by testing prices until the profit after fees reaches your target.

What is the highest margin possible on Etsy?

The transaction fee and payment processing fee together take 9.5% of every order, so your margin can never reach 90.5%, however high the price. The calculator accepts margin targets below 90%.

Does the suggested price include shipping?

No. It is the price per item. Shipping you charge is entered separately; it counts toward what the buyer pays and Etsy charges its transaction and processing fees on it as well.

Should I set prices with Offsite Ads included?

Etsy only charges the Offsite Ads fee on orders that came from its ads. If some of your sales come that way, check your price with the option turned on: it shows the price you would need for those orders to still meet your target.

Why can the suggested price differ by a cent from my own maths?

Etsy rounds each fee to the cent, so a one-cent price change can move the fees by a cent in either direction. The calculator checks the prices around the answer one cent at a time and shows the lowest one that reaches your target.
