How Etsy fees are calculated

A US seller using Etsy Payments pays these fees on a typical order. Rates are taken from Etsy’s Fees & Payments Policy and Etsy Payments Policy.

FeeUS rateCharged on
Transaction fee6.5%Item price + shipping you charge + gift wrap. Not on sales tax.
Payment processing3% + $0.25 per orderThe order total, including shipping and sales tax
Listing fee$0.20 per item soldEach listing, and each automatic renewal after an item sells
Offsite Ads fee15%, or 12% for shops past $10,000 in salesItem price + shipping + gift wrap, only on orders from an Etsy offsite ad. Max $100 per order.

Not included in the result: income tax, Etsy Ads spend (add it under “Other costs”), subscriptions such as Etsy Plus, listing renewals for items that don’t sell, and refunds. See the full method and sources.

Example: a $25 print with $5 shipping

You sell a print for $25.00 and charge $5.00 for shipping. The print costs you $8.00 to make and the label costs $4.50. The sale did not come from an Offsite Ad.

Buyer pays (item + shipping)$30.00
Transaction fee — 6.5% × $30.00−$1.95
Payment processing — 3% × $30.00 + $0.25−$1.15
Listing fee−$0.20
Item cost and shipping label−$12.50
Profit$14.20

Etsy fees come to $3.30, or 11.0% of what the buyer paid. The margin is 47.3%. With the same costs, any price below $9.31 loses money.

Questions sellers ask

How much does Etsy take from each sale?

For a US seller, every order pays a 6.5% transaction fee on the item price, shipping and gift wrap, plus payment processing of 3% + $0.25 on the order total. Each item sold also uses up a $0.20 listing.

On a $25 item with $5 shipping, that comes to $3.30. Orders that came from an Etsy Offsite Ad pay another 12% or 15%.

Does Etsy charge fees on shipping?

Yes. The transaction fee and the payment processing fee are both calculated on the shipping you charge the buyer, not just the item price. The cost of the label you buy is separate and comes out of your balance.

Does Etsy charge fees on sales tax?

Partly. For US sellers, the 6.5% transaction fee and the Offsite Ads fee are not charged on sales tax. The payment processing fee is charged on the total, including tax. Etsy collects and pays the sales tax itself, so it is never part of your income.

How does the Offsite Ads fee work?

If a buyer clicks an Etsy ad on another site and orders from your shop within 30 days, Etsy charges 15% of the order (item, shipping and gift wrap). Shops with $10,000 or more in sales over the past year pay 12% instead, and can no longer opt out.

The fee is capped at $100 per order. You only pay it on orders Etsy attributes to its ads, so leave it off for normal sales.

What does break-even price mean?

It is the lowest item price at which the order makes $0.00 or more, keeping your costs, shipping and options the same. Below that price, fees and costs are larger than what the buyer pays.

Why might my Etsy statement be a few cents different?

Etsy calculates each fee on the actual order, and partial refunds change the fees after the fact. This calculator rounds each fee to the nearest cent; Etsy does not publish its rounding method, so a one-cent difference is possible.

Can I use this outside the United States?

Not yet. Payment processing fees depend on where your bank account is — for example, the UK rate is 4% + £0.20 — and sellers in some countries also pay a regulatory operating fee. This calculator only uses the US rates.
